Next Week I'll Be On a Church Mission Trip

Next week I'll be Father to Daughters AND to Sons as I join members of my own church and several others as we venture to Davidson, NC for a Mission Trip from our church and others.

I really don't know what is in store for me with all of these middle school kids, but since I used to direct an in-service musical each year involving this age group, I think I'll relate pretty well to then.

I'll take my still camera, my miniature video camera, and some pads of paper and be ready to capture much of what takes place so that I may share it later.

Have you even joined your Daughter on a trip like this? A few years ago I went on a Habitat for Humanities project trip with high school students from our church, and it was a great experience (well, sleeping on a hardwood floor isn't a joy ride, but being with some many creative, active kids is great!).

We're in the research phase. Kate, Maribeth, and I (with input from Liz, Stacie, Pam, Victoria, and others) came up with a master list of possible categories of Fathers (and also a list of categories for Daughters).

The lists are long, involved, creative, emotional.

Fathers of sports and Fathers of Wars; Fathers from music and film and the stage and Fathers from government, fire companies, and industry. Famous fathers and those you don't yet know about… but will when we highlight them.

And Daughters from sports, cancer cures, and those still in diapers.

As a Father of two beautiful, strong women daughters, I'm grateful that I'm so close to them. But too many men feel they must hold back with their emotions, and I hope that by shedding light on their stories, both the Fathers and the Daughters they love will share a deepness of understanding they haven't known before.

So as we narrow our lists to those we will focus on first, we hope you'll write to us. Let us know whom YOU feel should be profiled in our books, our DVDs and CDs, and here online.

Now's the time to share the love these Fathers have for their Daughters (and vice versa), and we look forward to having you here with us all along the way.
